We want the students in all grades to experience a variety of published fiction and non-fiction in their daily reading and writing. To do this, we utilize a Workshop approach in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. While it looks a little different in this wide grade-span, the principles are the same. Writer's Workshop allows students to create real pieces of writing, across many genres, that serve a variety of purposes. The students understand all of the purposes of writing.
We started using the MAISA Units for Reading and Writing in both Elementary Schools. These units were developed by Michigan Teachers and have been receiving many accolades for their depth ans scope of the Common Core State Standards. Reading Apprenticeship and the Writing Collaborative are teaching strategies used at the Middle School and High School. These models teach students to read for understanding and to write in a variety of content areas. Middle and High School Students read a variety of texts and novels to meet the demands of the Common Core State Standards. The courses are organized to make sure students are ready for college or career once they complete our program. |
