Milan Area Schools, along with the State of Michigan, are in the process of converting our curriculum to meet the Next Generation Science Standards. These standards are comprehensive across all grade levels and subject matter. Under these standards the students will have a deeper understanding of the concepts, as well as, having a practical understanding of their real-life application in the world. The addition of Engineering Practices into these standards is another reason that they are appealing to districts across the country.
In the elementary schools, we currently use Battle Creek Science Kits as the main platform to deliver the content. Click here to see the Battle Creek Kit Schedule by grade level.
The Middle and High Schools use a variety of textbooks, experiments, and teacher-created materials to teach the content standards. The science departments in both schools have worked to align their content to the NGSS. The next change will be to expect a deeper understanding of the concepts.
